Description Juniper berries have also been used as a flavouring for foods that were pickled, and as a popular flavouring for food and alcoholic beverages. Juniper berries have been used to flavour gin, a liquor developed in the 17th century in the Netherlands. Other juniper-flavored alcoholic beverages include the Finnish rye-and-juniper beer made from the juniper berries and branches. Juniper is a coniferous shrub that produces berries. Juniper berries should be picked with great respect as it takes 3 full years for a berry to ripen! When ripe they turn from green to a dark blue. The ripe berries can be picked any time of the year. Across the planet — from Australia to the Faroe Islands — the culinary world is rediscovering a very old idea, foraging for food. Foraging is about celebrating life itself, what nature offers the world, and for nature to flourish again the next year. Our Juniper Berries are wildly foraged in the Balkan mountains. Directions For making Juniper Berry tea, use 1/2 tablespoons with 2 cups of hot water. Steep for 10 minutes then strain. Add honey as desired. Storage Air and moisture can affect the quality of Juniper. Use airtight containers or sealable plastic bags to store the juniper berries. It will keep the moisture away and will keep them fresh for a long time.
